It’s been a rather hectic chinese new year, complete with the rushing everywhere and meeting all the relatives, but I’m quite happy that I’ve capped it off by spending a day with some of the best friends in the whole wide world. All the way up in Woodlands just doing whatever we fancied, the whether was fair, the company was fantastic and there was enough food and drink to go around. And in Woodlands it’s just so incredibly peaceful and we plonked ourselves at the tennis court and we did what we do best.

After meeting up with all my dad’s scout friends, I find it hard to refute the idea of all of us coming together once again and meeting up 20, 30 years from now and reconnecting wherever. I’ve started archiving our photos. One of these days we’ll show them to our kids and these will be our version of faded brown photographs, captured perfectly from the days when we were still young and boisterous and carefree.

I felt an incredible sense of relief today with them, almost as if I had rediscovered some childhood joy that had been kept away and stored under lock and key and I finally managed to break the lock. Like there was no other care in the world and the only thing left to do was be happy and bask in the warmth of friendship all around.

So tomorrow and Friday we’ve got more outings. Who knows where we’ll go next.

And of course as we trudged back in the darkness towards the MRT station (as we’ve done so many times together before, under different circumstances) I couldn’t help but absorb all the serene vibes that were lingering in the air and it was this amazing sense of precious nostalgia, that there was only this moment of togetherness and we were all held together by tender red threads that will never break.
